Fine Art Nude Photography: Lighting, Posing, and Photographing the Human Form

Learn to light, pose, and photograph the human form--and create beautiful, expressive fine art photographs. Capturing the nude human form has been a part of photography almost since the medium's inception, and it remains one of the most empowering and liberating challenges that the medium offers. Though the subject is, by definition, straightforward--the human form is the ultimate blank canvas--the photographic options are limitless as you strive to create a beautiful, elegant, and expressive photograph. At the same time, with such simple subject matter, there is nowhere to hide. Poor lighting and ineffective posing will show. If you have no concept to explore or story to tell, it will show. Whether you're curious about conducting your first fine art nude shoot or you're a seasoned photographer who wants to vastly improve your lighting and posing skills, photographer and author Lindsay Adler will teach you how to infuse artistry and technique into your visual capture of the nude form. In Fine Art Nude Photography, Lindsay teaches you all about: - Shoot concepts: Find inspiration and develop a story for your shoot, and learn to avoid the "cringe factor" that can result when working without focus or intention - Models: Find models to work with, understand proper etiquette, and navigate model releases - Posing: Learn the posing fundamentals for the nude form, plus five essential poses you need to know - Lighting: Master the art of sculpting and defining the human form with light and shadow Throughout the book, you'll also hear directly from professional fine art nude models so that you can understand their needs, how to conduct yourself, and how to better collaborate to ensure a successful shoot. Finally, Lindsay includes ten complete shoots where, from start to finish, she shares her thought process behind each shoot, including concept, lighting, posing, retouching, and final selections.

David Lynch: Nudes

Ten years after the exhibition The Air Is on Fire, which presented David Lynch's photographic and painting work, the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain brought together in this book more than 100 black-and-white and color images of female nudes by the artist. These erotically charged photographs are close to abstraction, offering kaleidoscopic visions of the subject. They attest to Lynch's fascination with the infinite variety of the human body, while being in line with his cinematographic work.

The Nude in Photography

Born like Venus on the half shell from the centuries-long tradition of the nude in painting, the nude first appeared as a subject matter in photography with the introduction of the medium itself, between 1837 and 1840, and has continued as an ever-evolving theme through changing technical developments and cultural mores to the present day. This volume surveys the subject of nudity from the earliest surviving photographs of Greek and Roman sculpture through studies of living nude models for aesthetic or scientific purposes to the burgeoning practice of exploring the human body as pure form.   The seventy-eight works, selected from the extensive collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum and further contextualized here in the essay “Masterworks of the Nude,” span the entire arc of the history of photography in a manner that is both fresh and illuminating. Among the sixty-four photographers included are nineteenth-century masters Julia Margaret Cameron, Edgar Degas, and Thomas Eakins; early-twentieth-century artists Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz, and Edward Weston; mid-twentieth-century innovators Bill Brandt, Harry Callahan, and Minor White; late-twentieth-century image makers Diane Arbus, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Herb Ritts; and contemporary artists Chuck Close, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, and Mona Kuhn.

Fine Art Nudes: Lighting and Posing for Black & White Photography

In this book, veteran photographer Stan Trampe shows you how to produce outstanding black & white nude portraits using basic equipment and a simple lighting approach--both in the studio and on location. You'll get great insight into what it takes to develop a trusting relationship with models that will facilitate an eagerness for them to embrace--and even improve upon--your creative concepts. With more than 25 years' experience photographing nudes, Trampe has developed an eye for what makes a portrait resonate with viewers. In the pages of this book, you'll discover what makes his black & white fine-art nude images tick. You'll get tips for choosing dramatic indoor and outdoor locations that will serve as the perfect backdrop and set the mood in the image. You will also learn how to create or find great natural light that shows texture and contours the model's body for added appeal. Posing subjects to coax curves and highlight the subject's physical aspects is of obvious import in this genre, and Trampe teaches you to help conceptualize a strategy that not only makes the subject look good but, in many cases, even plays off of another shape in the overall image. He also teaches you when and how adding fabric or props will further your image, and when less is more. Also included are pages on traditional compositional guidelines such as effective framing, leading lines, and the Rule of Thirds. Finally, Trampe ends with a look at basic retouching in postproduction to lighten or darken the image, remove blemishes, and creatively crop the image for added impact. Whether you are new to photographing artful nudes or simply want to learn some new ideas to work into your repertoire, this book will enhance every aspect of your photography.

The History of the Nude

A richly illustrated and extremely enjoyable reference book on the historical evolution of the nude. From the Paleolithic "great mothers" to the Greek athletes, from the Venus of Urbino by Titian to Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man, from the Odalisque by Boucher to those by Ingres, to the Amazons of Helmut Newton and the desolate, lifeless bodies of Andres Serrano, the nude is the theme of artistic representation par excellence. The nude body as the incarnation of perfect beauty and the suspicions concerning its sensuality imposed by Christian culture; the renewed triumph of ancient beauty in the Renaissance and the study of anatomy; the visual licentiousness of the eighteenth century and the photographic nude; ideal beauty, eroticism, pornography; the nude also as representation of the ugly and its flaunted truthfulness in the art of the twentieth century; the nude that itself becomes a work of art in the avant-garde of the post-WWII period, with performance, body art and experimental theater. These threads of the narration make for a deeply informative historical exploration of the nude in Western art, all conducted around a rich apparatus of images.

The Male Nude
